At Red Door Counseling & Psychotherapy, PLLC, we believe therapy works best when it’s a collaborative process. This page outlines your rights as a client, as well as the responsibilities you have in the therapeutic relationship.

Your Rights

As a client, you have the right to:

  1. Respect and Dignity – Be treated with courtesy, respect, and without discrimination based on race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, disability, or any other protected status.

  2. Confidentiality – Have your personal health information kept private, except where disclosure is required or permitted by law.

  3. Informed Consent – Receive clear information about the counseling process, methods used, potential risks and benefits, and the estimated duration of treatment.

  4. Participation in Treatment – Be actively involved in setting goals and making decisions about your therapy.

  5. Access to Records – Request to view or obtain copies of your clinical records, in accordance with Texas law and HIPAA regulations.

  6. Refuse or Withdraw – Refuse any therapeutic intervention or withdraw from counseling at any time, without penalty (although payment for sessions already provided will still be required).

  7. File a Complaint – Voice concerns or complaints about your counseling experience without fear of retaliation, and file a formal complaint with the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors if needed.

  8. Cultural Consideration – Receive therapy that respects your cultural background, values, and beliefs.

  9. Good Faith Estimate – If you are uninsured or choose not to use insurance, you are entitled to receive a Good Faith Estimate of the expected cost of your services. This estimate will outline the anticipated number of sessions, the cost per session, and any additional fees you may incur. The estimate is not a contract and your actual costs may vary based on your treatment needs.

Your Responsibilities

As a client, you are expected to:

  1. Active Participation – Attend scheduled sessions and engage honestly in the counseling process.

  2. Communication – Share relevant information openly with your therapist so they can provide the best possible care.

  3. Respect for Boundaries – Maintain appropriate boundaries with your therapist and follow agreed-upon guidelines for communication outside of sessions.

  4. Timely Cancellation – Provide at least 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment. Missed appointments without proper notice will incur a cancellation fee.

  5. Payment – Pay for services at the time they are provided, unless other arrangements are made in advance.

  6. Use of Secure Communication – Use the HIPAA-compliant SimplePractice client portal for messaging and telehealth, and understand that standard email or text is not used for confidential information.

  7. Crisis Protocol – Seek immediate emergency services (call 911 or 988, or go to the nearest emergency room) if you are in crisis, as your therapist is not available for crisis intervention outside of scheduled sessions.

  8. Mutual Respect – Treat your therapist and office staff (if applicable) with the same courtesy and respect that you receive.

Questions or Concerns

If you have questions about your rights or responsibilities, please bring them up with your therapist at any time. Open communication is an important part of effective therapy.
